1st Birthday w/ Pional & Semtek

Has it really been a year since we commandeered Mint Club for our premier outing into the murky depths of Leeds nightlife? The answer, of course, is no – it’s been 377 days. But they say that time flies when you’re having fun, and we’d be inclined to agree. Five events (and a crafty hop over to The Garage) later, we feel as though we’ve left an indelible mark on the face of this beautiful city and to celebrate we’re putting on one of our best line-ups to date.

Pional (pronounced “pee-o-nahl”, not “pie-uh-nul” like we all used to think it was) crafts thoughtful, carefully considered house music with bags of Iberian charm and acute indie-pop sensibilities. His solo output on Permanent Vacation and Hivern Discs – in addition to highly lauded collaborations with fellow countryman John Talabot – tout a sun-drenched yet melancholy sound that’s been turning heads for a few years now. Think heartbreak and ecstasy by the sea. His rare DJ sets are known to combine the best in vintage US deep house with ethereal modular offerings from Daphni et al...we’re certainly looking forward to seeing what presents he brings to our party.

Semtek, or Cambridge’s own Benjamin Roth, has been running the acclaimed Don't Be Afraid label since 2009, home to Mr. Beatnick, Alis, Claws For?, Mgun, Photonz and of course his own inimitable productions. His is an esoteric take on electronic music that melds hallmark elements of house and techno together into fearful, gripping machine funk. As far as his own selections go, his recent Little White Earbuds podcast expertly showcased a varied palate for all things 4/4, classic and contemporary...we’ve no doubt he’ll be able to blow out those candles.
